  • Skin is the #1 largest organ
  • The average skin, when stretched out is 2 square meters.
  • Skin accounts for 15% of your body weight.
  • There are 2 types of skin: hairy and glabrous.
  • Your skin has 3 layers:

• Epidermis (dead/waterproof)
• Dermis (hair/sweat glands)
• Subcutis (fat/large blood vessels)

  • The thinnest skin is found on eyelids (0.02mm thick)
  • The thickest skin is found on feet (1.4mm deep)
  • Scar tissue lacks hair/sweat glands.
  • A body hair will grow from 2-6 years.
  • You lose around 20-100 hairs a day.
  • The hair, outer layer of human skin, and nails are made of a protein called keratin.
  • Every hair has a small muscle called the pili. This allows your hair to be raised when cold or in a “heightened emotional state”. (Arrector pili muscle= goosebumps)

  • Around 7% of cells are melanocytes.
  • There are two types of melanin: 

• Pheomelanin (yellow to red in colour)
• Eumelanin (dark brown to black)

  • Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, skin colour is due to their activity, not their quantity.
  • 1 in 110,000 people have albinism, a lack of melanocytes.
  • Melanin is also responsible for eye colour. The skin covering the eye is transparent (and very sensitive).
  • It takes up to 6 months for babies to develop their permanent skin tone.
  • Acne is caused by an overproduction of cells that line the sweat gland.
  • Sometimes, babies get acne in their first few weeks of life.
  • 4/5 teenagers suffer from some form of acne.
  • 1/20 adult women suffer from acne.
  • 1/100 adult men suffer from acne.
  • Boils are caused by the staphylococcal bacteria. It enters through a cut and travels down to the hair follicle.
